Recently at NIFS, our volunteers have been planning and coordinating events in our NIFS Lounge, in an effort to create cultural exchange between foreigners living in Nara, and Japanese citizens. This event series is know as the Waku Waku Club.
The “Kosodate Club” (literally, “Child Rearing Club”) is a chance for foreign parents and children and Japanese parents and children to come together and learn about each others culture, while doing all sorts of fun activities with the kids.
The other “Workshop” type events cover all manner of world cultures (including Japan).
Even if you don’t have complete confidence in speaking Japanese, both parents and children can follow along, since the staff can regulate their Japanese language usage to many levels of understanding. There have been many Japan related events, such as kimono-wearing days and origami lessons, as well as cooking classes for foods from all over the world, and there are still many more fun events on the way.
For people who want to practice easy Japanese, as well as people who have an interest in international culture sharing, these events are a great time to meet and converse with people from other countries. Since anyone can participate, we encourage you to come and participate if you are able. You won’t regret it!
If you would like more information about the events, or want to RSVP for the next one, please contact the NIFS office at least two days before the next event.
We also accept application through the online form located HERE.
The Nara Sanurimu Executive Committee is organizing another multicultural festival this year, the “Nara Sanurimu 2009″, and NIFS is participating with a Waku Waku Club exhibition. The committee has gathered many people who have roots in foreign countries who will work together to promote cultural exchange during the festival. Anybody can come and participate, so please stop by and check it out!
