Homestay and Home Visit

Please take note that we have restructured the general outline of the NIFS Homestay Program and we would like to request that you take a minute to read this general outline



Purpose

This program is for non Japanese who wish to gain a greater understanding of Japanese customs and culture through experiencing the daily lives of Japanese volunteer families in Nara Prefecture


Conditions

The following conditions must be met for you to be eligible to do a homestay with The Nara International Foundation (NIFS).

・You must be a non Japanese national and be interested in Japanese,(in particular Nara) culture, lifestyle, customs, and have a desire to deepen mutual cultural understanding with the host family.
・Your activities during your Nara homestay must centre around Nara Prefecture.
・Your activities during your visit to Japan must not be of a commercial nature.
・You must not be an employed permanent resident of Japan (foreign students expected) or have come to Japan on basis of employment / business



Terms

・You must be willing to take full responsibility for all your actions during the stay.
・For group homestays, your host organization / Japanese host organization must be willing to take full responsibility for you, including emergency cases such as you becoming sick, or you being involved in an accident.


Period of Homestay

A homestay period is in principle 1 week at most.



Fee and Other Costs

・In principle this homestay program is a free one but a fee of 1500 Japanese yen per day is applicable on and after the 7th night of your homestay. This is to cover part of your living expenses in your homestay family's home. All money are payable to your homestay family direct, NIFS does not accept any payment of money.

・Your host family will cover accommodation and food expenses during your homestay but all other personal costs as transportation, admissions fees to temples and museums, expenses while eating out and telephone calls etc remain your own responsibility.

・Your host family's volunteer insurance costs will be borne by NIFS.


Other Conditions

・In the event of an accident during the period of your homestay NIFS and the host family cannot be held liable.

・You cannot directly arrange the terms of your homestay with the homestay family.

・A change in the dates of the homestay or cancellations cannot be accepted after you have been matched with a host family.

・There is no guarantee that a placement can be found for homestay applicants. Please ensure you make arrangements in the case that NIFS is not able to secure a host family for you.

・NIFS strongly encourages homestay applicants to take out personal travel and medical insurance.


How to apply

As starters, please contact NIFS via telephone or E-mail. The organization that participate in this program need to fulfil all the conditions above.
All the following documents need to reach us 6 weeks before the intended start of your homestay program.
We cannot accept any applications that fall out of this time frame.
Please note that NIFS will not accept applications from companies running businesses that request homestays in Nara prefecture.


Necessary documents to be submitted

・Host Family Introduction Request Form (Form #2)
・Visitor Self Introduction Sheet (Form#3)→To be completed by the visitor participating in the homestay program
・Agreement (signed and dated) (Form #4) →To be completed by the visitor participating in the homestay program
・A copy of the visitor's passport
・A copy of the visitor’s student ID *if a student
・Schedule / time table for the visitor's time spent in Japan with details of activities in Nara.

The Nara International Foundation will scrutinize the above documents and only approved applications will be processed.
