[Useful information on living and culture/Setsubun / Mamemaki]
Setsubun or “sechiwakare” means the changing of the seasons and in this case it is it is the day before “risshun” (the change from winter to spring), February 3.
On this day there is a custom of throwing beans (mamemaki).
You should say, “Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi” (demons out, happiness in) when throwing the beans.
This is said because people do not want demons (misfortune) to enter the house, and want happiness to come in.
To keep demons away, the head of a sardine is skewered to a branch of the holly olive (hiiragi) which the demon hates and is placed at the gate of one’s house, and or, eat the same number of beans as one’s age.
In the Kansai area, there is the custom of eating the “eho-maki” sushi.
People eat a whole sushi roll (futomaki) without saying a word while facing the auspicious direction (eho) and hope for good health throughout the year.
Lots of “futomaki sushi” are sold at supermarkets on Setubun day.
