[Japanese Etiquette / Don’t make noise late at night]

The end of year is a season when many people gather with friends at home. Parties can last until very late, and Japan is sensitive to noises due to thin walls. Be careful not to speak in a loud voice or make too much noise late at night. In some apartment buildings there is a cut-off time for using the washing machine or playing music, so it would be advisable to check that out and apply it to keeping quiet hours.

[Ask a Foreigner: What I like about Nara living / Deer in Nara Park]

I am a student from China. What I like best in Nara are the deer, which roam around the city. Xian, my hometown, is also an old city with old cityscapes, but there aren’t any roaming deer. I couldn’t imagine to what extent they roam the old city of Nara until I saw them with my own eyes. When I first came to Nara, I saw the deer everywhere – in narrow alleys, in shopping streets, and, of course, in touristic places such as Kofukuji temple and Todaiji temple. Besides that, it is possible to see the deer in an environment closer to nature, forming groups to protect the smaller ones in forests and wide fields close to Mt. Wakakusayama and Tobihino. Both deer in the city and deer in nature have their individual appeals, and I like each of them very much.
