[Cultural Seed of Knowledge / Cherry-blossom viewing]

Cherry blossoms are very popular among Japanese people. Because the school and fiscal years begin in April and end in March, there are new encounters and some farewells. Perhaps because of this, cherry-blossom viewing is extra popular. During this season, many Japanese people can be seen going to famous spots for cherry-blossom viewing and enjoying parties under the blossoms.

[Seasonal Life Tips / School entrance season]

In Japan, most schools start the school year in April and finish in March. This is called “nendo” (school year). For example, the 2008 school year begins in April 2008 and finishes in March 2009. In most elementary, junior high and high schools, the school year is divided into 3 terms. The first term is from April to July, the second is from September to December and the third is from January to March. During the school year, there are usually 40 days for summer holidays, 2 weeks for winter holidays and 2 weeks for spring holidays.
