Opening a Bank Account

To open a bank account, you need to present your Certificate of Alien Registration and a deposit (more than \1). You should say to the bank clerk, 「こうざを ひらきたいので ほうほうを おしえて ください (Koza wo hirakitai no de, hoho wo oshiete kudasai)」. The bank clerk will explain the “opening a bank account” application form. Most bank clerks speak Japanese only. Savings accounts include an ordinary account (futsu koza) or general account (sogo koza) from which one can withdraw cash at anytime. There are also fixed-term savings accounts (teiki yokin koza) and installment savings account (tsumitate yokin koza) as well as the checking transfer account (toza furikae koza) which is used for business purposes. A cashing card is required when using an ATM (automatic teller machine). Apply for a cashing card when you open an account.
